End of year 2002 (Below)
Location: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Springs Group Campground, San Diego County
If the words smoky macaroni, 442 branding irons, a desert oasis, extreme off trail hiking, bighorn sheep and a little white camp mouse bring a smile to your face you must have been at Anza-Borrego.
For those of you who couldn’t join us, let me explain. Saturday morning started out with a beautiful 3-hour drive through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park to Anza Borrego. Once camp was set up Mike, Alex, Matt, Jamie, Harry, Howard and Kyle, teamed up and went off to explore the painted hills surrounding the campsite. After a quick lunch, we took a 3.4-mile hike. What started out as a nice easy trek quickly turned into extreme off trail rock hiking. We were lost for awhile but Eagle Bill B soon got us back on track. At trails end we discovered a beautiful desert oasis complete with a lush green palm grove and waterfalls.
Late afternoon was spent playing catch, more exploring, getting camp ready for nighttime, starting the campfire, and cooking dinner. The smoky macaroni was terrible. Not even a little white mouse who visited our campsite would eat it! Wiener’s cooked over the campfire were the main course. Evening was spent around the fire, joking around, eating S’mores and making 442 branding irons out of wire hangers. Oh what fun!
In the morning, Bill led Jamie, Harry, Howard and Kyle on another hike while Rich, Jim, Mike, Alex and Matt broke camp. While hiking Bill and Co. saw 21 bighorn sheep! On the way home we stopped at In ‘N Out Burger (of course) Special thanks to Eagle Scout Mike guiding the younger scouts. Special recognition to Matt for “hanging in there” even though you weren’t feeling well. It was another great campout! By Jim
Location: Joshua Tree National Park, Indian Cove Campsite
Joshua Tree National Park has been
described by Scout Leader Bill B. as an outdoor “Disneyland for boys.” The
troop arrived at Joshua Tree at 10:00 a.m. and quickly went to the climbing
station that Carlos had set up earlier. Sean, Howard, Bobby, Phil, Jamie, Daniel
G., Alex, Harry, Kyle, Justin, Matt and Greg spent the first part of the morning
either rope climbing or rock hopping. The afternoon was taken up with a quick
lunch, setting up camp (as usual Rich had the coolest stuff), more rock climbing
and exploring Joshua Tree’s many formations and trails. Evening highlights
included a delicious dinner prepared by the Scouts, campfire, apple desert,
short hikes, and star-gazing. At 2:30 in the morning, Jay H. was seen
aimlessly wandering the campsite while gazing up at the sky. In the morning,
when asked about this unusual behavior, he replied “The stars and meteor shower
were so beautiful, I stayed up a whole hour."
In the morning, the Scouts did some final rock hopping before breaking camp and
heading to In 'N Out Burger (the official fast food restaurant of Troop
442) for lunch. What a perfect ending to a fantastic outing. With endless rock
formations to explore and conquer, great weather, delicious food (thanks to
Susan A.) and the expert climbing assistance of Carlos and his friend John, a
great time was had by all at Joshua Tree! By Jim S.

Location: Long Beach, Terminal Island, Coast Guard
The scouts finally made it to the Coast Guard!! Despite the problems at the Port of LA that delayed the first planned visit, nine scouts were on their way early Sunday morning. Things began to look grim as their travels took them near the traffic pile up on the 710 freeway. After some quick thinking and a Thomas Guide, the Scouts were able to find a route to get them past the road closures and through the fog to their destination on time. The Scouts and leaders were then given an explanation of the Guard's duties, a tour of the facilities and shown the different boats used by the Guard. A stop for hamburgers and the tour was finally completed without any more delays. Thanks Bill B. for putting it together for the troop.
Location: Edwards Air Force Base Flight line
We had a great time watching those pilots "kick the tires and light the fires" and putting on some great aerial performances. For those of us who have grown up around these proud birds (and have become slightly deaf in the process) it was great to see these guys flying again particularly after everything that's happened in the last year. Brigadier General Chuck Yeager made his final supersonic flight as a military man just 55 years after he first did it over Edwards (then known as Muroc Dry Lake bed). The Army parachuting team did some wild things in the sky and the static displays where phenomenal. All in all I would say it was a great trip for boys and adults. --- By Scoutmaster Rich

Checks should be made payable to Troop 442. Orders can be turned in to Kellie F. anytime with the final date for turning in forms at the October 21st Troop meeting. Orders will be available for pick up after November 9th with the last date of November 18th at the Court of Honor. A Scout must sell over $50 to be eligible for a portion of the income to be banked into his account for summer camp.
The cookout at O'Neil Park was attended by a large crowd of parents and siblings who were served delicious meals by the Scouts. The Rhinos and Dragons Hearts served a Spooky Spaghetti dinner and the Dingos served up a delicious Chicken Taco Feast. The 8 Scouts planned their menus, did the shopping, prepared and served the meals for their guests. Unfortunately, an uninvited mountain lion tried to join the nighttime snack which caused the evacuation of the camp at the request of the Park Rangers. After packing up the tents, the Scouts decided to return to their homes and sleep in the comfort of their own beds. Thanks Scouts for a delicious meal.

Work crews began at 5:00am setting up for one of our best ever garage sales. We earned $790 that will be distributed among the participating scouts to help defray Summer Camp costs for this year. Please go the list to verify the shares you earned. The dollar amount you earned will be announced later. If you would like to donate your shares back to the Troop, please notify Susan R. All items that were left over were donated to the Salvation Army. A big THANK YOU to Bill, Colleen, Jay and Faye for putting it all together for the Troop and spending the long hours it takes to make it happen.
The overnight campout was attended by 11 scouts and three adults. Despite the heat and the crowds, a good time was had by all.

During the Monday troop meeting, there was a MANDATORY PARENT MEETING. A folder with your Scout's rank advancement and information for the year was handed out. If you were unable to attend and did not send a representative for your family, please contact Joan to make arrangements to obtain this important information.
A great end to a busy summer was enjoyed by the families at the BBQ held at the Court of Honor. Summer camp merit badges and others were awarded along with rank advancements. Recapping the year was Scout Troop Leader Stephen with a few words from Leader Phil giving us the results of summer camp. Bill and Jay presented the information about the Garage Sale and Leader Rich told us about the opportunity we will have to sail on the Argus. More information about these events will be presented at the troop's September 9th meeting and posted here.
11 Scouts showed up and had a great time climbing the walls. They were assisted by three very friendly and helpful staff members from Rockreation. Thanks to Mrs. G. for providing munchies for the parents and Scouts.
